The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences is an organization responsible for presenting the annual Emmy Awards for outstanding work in the field of television production. The Emmy Awards have been presented annually since 1949 and reported 12.4 million viewers for its September 2011 broadcast.
With the hopes of enhancing the viewers’ Emmy-watching experience, the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences wanted to create an iPhone app that would give users access to the vast amounts of information available about both the current and the past Emmy Awards. An important issue on the table was the ability to update the content for each year’s show without having to completely change the application.
Due to an extremely tight time frame, Truelogic’s iOS team and our international partner Devious Media built the app from scratch in a quarter of the time normally required for an app of this caliber and for one-tenth the price. Using Drupal as the CMS, the app was developed to access the content created, entered and managed by the webmasters of Emmys.com. A crucial feature of this app was the ability to access and view videos of all Emmy-related events, and as such Truelogic re-coded all the Academy’s videos that were hosted on Brightcove so that they could be viewed on future iOS mobile devices as well as on today’s versions of the iPhone, iPad, and iTouch. Thanks to Drupal’s web services, any information uploaded to the Emmy website was automatically loaded onto the app, keeping it completely up-to-date with all the news that a user might be interested in.
